Khan's housing policy snapshot
As Londoners prepared to vote for their new
mayor last Thursday, the housing issue is at the front of many of their minds. The first Labour mayor to have been
elected since Ken Livingstone left the post in 2008, Sadiq Khan has had housing
policy at the forefront of his manifesto. As the cost of living in London
continues to rise, Khan has zoned in on generating more homes for Londoners. Brinkley's Estate Agents offer many properties in the surrounding areas of Putney, Southfields and Wimbledon.
As Khans
conquest in the race has been specified, we take a look at his key housing
policies and how they are set to be initiated.
Khan’s key strategies:
- To provide support to housing
associations in order for 80,000 new homes a year to be built in London.
- To make 50% of new homes built genuinely
affordable.
- To enforce that Londoners are given the
option to buy newly built homes first.
- To improve tenants’ rights when renting,
including more control over contract length, cost of rent and the living standard
of homes.
How Khan plans to deliver
Londoners with results:
- By setting up a new team in City Hall,
‘Homes for Londoners’.
- By creating an alliance with councils,
housing associations, developers and businesses.
- By building on land currently owned by
the Mayor and bidding on other public sector land.
- By bringing the case for landlord
licensing schemes to government.
How well these initiatives are applied
remains to be seen, but it is set to be a very exciting four years for
Londoners and the city’s property market.
